The History of Kampot Pepper

Kampot pepper, often referred to as the "king of spices," is a product of Cambodia’s rich history and fertile lands. Its story dates back to the 13th century when it was first cultivated in the Kampot region, where the unique combination of climate, soil, and traditional farming techniques created a pepper of unparalleled flavor and aroma.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kampot pepper had gained international acclaim, becoming a staple in French cuisine and a symbol of premium quality. However, Cambodia’s turbulent history in the mid-20th century disrupted production, and this legendary spice nearly disappeared.

In recent decades, through the dedication of local farmers and the support of international recognition, Kampot pepper has made a remarkable comeback. It was awarded protected Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2010, placing it alongside Champagne and Parma Ham as one of the world’s most exclusive regional products. Today, Kampot pepper is celebrated globally for its complex flavor profiles: the bold heat of black pepper, the fruity sweetness of red pepper, and the smooth, refined taste of white pepper.

Who we are

At L'or Noir, we believe that every grain of pepper tells a story—a story of tradition, hard work, and the resilience of Cambodian farmers.

Born from the rich soils of Kampot, our pepper is cultivated with care by local farmers who have perfected their craft over generations. However, their talent has often been overshadowed by the lack of opportunities due to the lack of market. We started L'or Noir, to bring their incredible pepper to the world while creating a brighter future for their families and communities.

When you choose L'or Noir, you’re not just adding flavor to your dishes—you’re supporting local farmers, empowering Cambodian communities, and becoming part of a mission to make a difference.
