FAQs

Why is Kampot pepper so special?

  • Kampot pepper is a type of pepper grown in the Kampot region of Cambodia. It is known for having more aroma, warmth, and depth than regular grocery-store pepper. Many people notice the difference as soon as they open the jar.

  • Most regular pepper is made to be cheap and consistent. Kampot pepper is grown for flavor. It has a stronger smell, a cleaner heat, and a richer taste, so you do not need to use as much to notice the difference.

  • Our pepper is grown in Cambodia, in the Kampot region, where farmers have been cultivating pepper for generations. The soil, climate, and farming methods all help give Kampot pepper its unique flavor.

  • “L’or Noir” means “black gold” in French. We chose the name because Kampot pepper is one of Cambodia’s most valuable agricultural products. It is small, but it carries a lot of history, flavor, and opportunity for Cambodian farmers.

  • If you are new to Kampot pepper, start with Black Kampot Pepper. It is the easiest to use every day and the best replacement for regular black pepper. If you want something more special, try Red Kampot Pepper. If you cook a lot of lighter dishes, seafood, soups, or creamy sauces, White Kampot Pepper is a great choice.

  • Kampot pepper has heat, but it is not spicy like chili. The heat is warm, clean, and aromatic. It adds flavor without overwhelming the dish.

How do I use Kampot pepper?

  • For the best flavor, we recommend using a pepper grinder with whole peppercorns. Freshly cracked pepper has more aroma and taste than pre-ground pepper because the flavor is released right when you grind it.

Whole peppercorns also stay fresh longer. Once pepper is ground, it slowly loses its smell and strength, which is why many cooks prefer to grind it fresh.

To keep your pepper at its best, store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep the jar sealed when not in use so the aroma stays fresh.

  • When stored properly, whole peppercorns can stay flavorful for 1–2 years. For the best taste, keep them whole in a sealed jar or grinder and grind only what you need right before using. Once pepper is ground, it slowly loses its aroma and heat.

Store your pepper in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, moisture, and heat. Grind fresh when cooking or serving so the aroma comes out stronger and the heat stays clean and full.
